How To Pick The Right Sunglasses For You

How To Pick The Right Sunglasses For You

There are so many styles of sunglasses out there to choose from. Aviators, wayfarers, cat eyes … it’s easy to get overwhelmed! If you’re looking for your next pair of shades, let us help you pick the best ones for you and for your face.

First you’ll need to determine your face shape. There are five common face shapes: round, square, heart, diamond or oval, and which face shape you have determines what sunglasses would be the best fit for you. In order to decide on your face shape, take a few measurements. Pull your hair back from your face and be sure to jot these down as you go.

First, measure the length of your face by putting the ruler just under the eyes and measuring from ear to ear (stop where the ear begins). Then place the ruler at the top of your forehead at your hairline and measure to your chin. The width and length will give you a ratio (width:length).

Also measure across your forehead at the widest point, measure the widest length across your cheekbones and measure your jawline at the widest point.

With these measurements in mind, check out the face shapes and their descriptions below and see which best fits you!

1. Round Face

What It Looks Like:

Is the width of your face about the same as the length? Do you have a rounded jawline and soft features? Is your forehead rounded at the hairline?

What Types of Sunglasses Are Best:

Your goal should be to lengthen the look of your face. Try cat eye glasses, aviators, big sunglasses with square frames or wayfarers. Avoid round glasses (which will make your face look extra rounded) and glasses that cover the eyebrows

2. Oval Face

What it Looks Like:

Is your face’s length greater than the width? Are your cheekbones the widest part of your face? Do you have no sharp angles on your jaw or chin? Do you have a tall forehead?

What Types of Sunglasses Are Best:

Luckily for you, you have one of the easiest faces for sunglasses! Glasses with round or oval frames will work well for you. You can also wear aviators or cat-eye glasses. Do avoid glasses that appear to wide or big for your face, as that will take away from your awesome bone structure.

3. Square Face

What It Looks Like:

Is your hairline a straight line? Do the sides of your face follow a straight line from your forehead to your jaw? Do you have a sharp, square jaw?

What Types of Sunglasses Are Best:

Try large frames where the frame width equals the width of your face and oval/round frames. Some people can’t do the large frames, so consider yourself lucky! The sunglasses to avoid would be the ones with narrow frames or square frames that look too much like the shape of your face.

4. Diamond Face

What It Looks Like:

Is your face widest at the cheekbones? Are your jawline and forehead the same width (and both smaller than your cheekbones)? Do you have a narrow chin with a strong point?

What Types of Sunglasses Are Best:

Along with oval face shapes, you are blessed with the ability to wear pretty much whatever you’d like. Choose your favorite of any type of sunglasses, but be sure that they keep with your proportions. Anything wider than your cheekbones will make the widest part of your face appear even wider (and, in turn, make your chin and forehead appear smaller than they actually are).

5. Heart-Shaped Face

What It Looks Like:

Is your forehead the widest part of your face? Do you have a narrow, pointy chin? Is the length of your face short versus long?

What Types of Sunglasses Are Best:

To look your best, try sunglasses that balance out the wider top part of your face and the narrow bottom part of your face. Try rounded frames, aviators and wayfarers. Avoid glasses that cover the eyebrows and anything that looks too oversized.
