Choosing The Best Prom Dress For Your Shape

Prom season is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start looking for the perfect dress for your big day!

With so many dresses to choose from, it’s hard to know which one will be best for you. The key to the perfect prom dress is knowing your body type and finding a dress that accentuates your best qualities while drawing attention away from things you’re not as comfortable with.

Here is our best dress advice for every body type (but do remember to check your school’s dress code before you make your final decision!):

Apple Shape

If you have an apple body shape, you carry most of your weight around the middle. You also likely have amazing legs, so good for you, girl! Look for dresses with a defined waist and some embellishment at the top so it helps slim down the look of your midsection and draws the attention up to your face. Try high necklines, sweetheart necklines or off the shoulder, but whichever top style you choose, go with a fuller skirt to keep all eyes on your best features!

Pear Shape

Do you have a well defined waist with full hips and curvy legs? Hello pretty pear! Show off your upper body with a strapless, deep v-neck or embellished top, and bonus if you can find a dress with a lace up back to cinch in your tiny waist even more. Choose a flowy or A-line skirt that will conceal wider hips.

Hourglass

Look at you, curvy girl! Fortunately you were blessed with a figure that is perfectly proportional, giving you the opportunity to wear pretty much anything you’d like. From fitted to mermaid to ball gown-style, choose a look that speaks to you, and bring the attitude with you to rock it on your prom night.

Petite

Do you measure in at 5’3” or below? You’re going to want to look for prom dresses that don’t overwhelm your small frame. Avoid options that have a lot of fabric and instead opt for a shorter, flirty dress! If you’ve really got your heart set on something long, try one with a thigh slit or that’s fitted to add height to your look. Also don’t forget a good platform heel so you get the extra height plus the comfort to dance all night!

Athletic/Slender

If you have a slender body type, you probably understand the struggle of trying to give the illusion of some curves. Don’t worry! It’s easy to add curves with the right dress. Accent your natural gift of a slender body with a fitted mermaid-style dress or try a ball gown style to add some curves! With your body type, you can also go with a shorter dress—just make sure to find one that accents the waist and has some poof at the bottom!
